IMARA FOR BLACK MEN AND GIRLS’ EMPOWERMENT (IMAGE)
IMAGE (IMARA for Black Men and Girls Empowerment) is a family-based HIV/STI intervention engaging Black girls (ages 13-17 years old), young women (ages 18-24 years old), and Black men in their lives (i.e., biological fathers, stepfathers, grandfathers, brothers, uncles, mentors). Program modules focus on sexual violence and objectification of Black girls and women, relationships, and how to be a positive role model for Black girls. IMAGE is delivered over Saturdays and Sundays at local community-based organizations on Chicago’s South and West sides.
PrEPING FOR BLACK LOVE (P4BL)
PrEPing for Black Love (P4BL) is an HIV group care intervention for Black women (18+) that centers Black love, sisterhood, and peer support to empower healthy sexual decision-making and PrEP uptake. P4BL intervention consists of three weekly, two-hour group sessions designed to promote sexual health, HIV prevention, and PrEP engagement among Black women through a trauma-informed, sex-positive, and culturally grounded approach.
ZAMBIAN INFORMED MOTIVATED AWARE AND RESPONSIBLE ADOLESCENTS AND ADULTS (ZAIMARA)
ZAIMARA (Zambian Informed Motivated Aware and Responsible Adolescents and Adults). ZAIMARA is an HIV and STI prevention program designed for adolescent girls, young women, and their mother figures in Lusaka, Zambia. This study aims to better understand the impact of colorism on Zambian girls’ sexual development and health, with particular attention to understanding and interrupting the intergenerational transmission of colorist beliefs and behaviors.
IMARA-SOUTH AFRICA (IMARA-SA)
IMARA-SA is an evidence-based mother-daughter sexual health and HIV/STI prevention program. It provides family-based support to lower HIV/STI incidence and increase the uptake of PrEP.
COLORISM, MASCULINITY AND INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE AMONG BLACK BOYS AND MEN
This is a newer area of our team's research which examines the role of colorism, masculinity and how that influences their relationships and protection of Black girls and women.
